STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — On balmy summer evenings when back from the movies, restaurateur Frank Rapacciuolo encourages all to come back to his place for lolipop lamb chops and artisan pizza. This hospitality happens with his new concept launch called “La Terrazza” at Giovanni’s Trattoria.

Come Friday, May 19, the outdoor seating area at the Eltingville eatery will turn into just that, “La Terrazza” or the so-named “terrace” with umbrella-ed tables and a late-night dining menu. Service will run from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Bottomless brunch will be a feature on Sundays.

In the meantime, Giovanni’s Trattoria will operate as usual for lunch and dinner indoors.

There will a sneak peek of “La Terrazza” for a small number of guests, by invitation only, on Thursday, May 18 at 9 p.m. which showcases the new menu.

“Anyone interested in attending the soft opening can enter to win an invitation by texting the word “GIOS” to the number 313131″ or go on the La Terrazza web site,” said Frank. He promises 25 lucky winners can come to the event as compliments of the house.

The principals in the project are ready to kick off.

As Alex Colizza, a co-owner and the pizzaiolo of the place, stands with his back to the 600-degree wood-fired oven, he talks up the pizza he’ll be serving to his restaurant’s night owls.

“I’ve been making pizza for over 20 years, in Italy and here,” he said. What makes his pies so special is the soft dough and fresh toppings like his own marinated cherry tomatoes and molten burrata cheese. This, along with other crunchy, wood-smoked pizzas, will be on the LaTerrazza menu.

Rapacciulo is excited to share his craft cocktails like juicy, citrus-kissed martinis on a warm May evening. Zesty Bloody Mary’s will be flowing at the Sunday brunch.

For the late-night menu, Chef Freddie Alvarez plans for an asparagus salad with crab meat and spring greens, a shrimp cocktail with a saucy, “Margarita” spin and chicken breast filled with fresh spinach leaves, parmesan and ricotta cheeses that is breaded, then deep fried.

Reservations are suggested although not necessary.
